Jerry Martin, M.A., though not a full time teacher now, has a background in education. He originally taught in the Peace Corps in Somalia from 1966 to 1968. Ha also taught in Charlotte Amalie High School in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
In Los Angeles and Kona, Hawaii he taught ESL to a variety of adult immigrant students.
Later, he developed a five day teacher education program called Raising Self-Esteem with Active Video in the Elementary Classroom, which he taught in Hawaii and California through university continuing education classes. This evolved into Active Video as a Teaching Tool and a published text book by that name. He taught this 2 day course as a continuing education program at various universities in California and Hawaii.
In 1997, after moving to Grass Valley, California, he began a program called Saluting New Readers, an innovative, prize-winning program that intrinsically motivates children to value reading. He now (2015) is on his 19th year doing this popular program as a volunteer in his local elementary schools. More information about Saluting New Readers can be found at a web site at:

Jerry is proud of this new effort to teach Sudoku to children and others. Sudoku teaches skills, logic and critical thinking, that will be extremely valuable, powerfully affecting lives in a productive way. He hopes to train other teachers to do the same.

With the addition of Team Sudoku in 2016, culminating in a successful, historical, first children's Team Sudoku tournament in April, 2017, followed by a second team tournament in April, 2018, this effort continues to expand and improve. A third team Sudoku tournament was held in April, 2019. Team Sudoku provides opportunities for children to simulate, while safe, emergencies in which humans collaborate to combat a non-human opponent such as a fire, flood or famine. We humans are best when opposing a common threat, and Team Sudoku gives us a fun chance to practice these important skills. And children love to work together while solving a mental challenge. It's common for boys and girls to cooperate in this effort, a rare teamwork in kids this age.
